What to know...

               Mississippi is known as the Magnolia State. The land that is now called Mississippi has been home to many tried including the Biloxi, Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Natchez for over 12,000 years. The word Mississippi means "big river" which is named after the Mississippi River.  Mississippi was discovered by French explorer Sieur de la Salle and had originally claimed the land for France. Not too soon after, the slave trade was established by European settlers and in 1798 Mississippi became U.S. territory.


Fun Facts:
 
  • Root Beer was invented in Biloxi, MS by Edward Adolf Barq, Sr. in 1898.
 
  • Blues Music was born in the Mississippi Delta.
 
  • With over 100,000 acres of catfish ponds, Mississippi is the farm-raised catfish capital of the U.S.
 
  • Coco-Cola was bottled for the very first time in Vicksburg, MS in 1984.
 
  • The magnolia is not only Mississippi's state flower, but it is also the state tree.

While Mississippi is home to the music of blues, the capital of Mississippi, "Jackson, MS" is renaming one of its major streets, "Ellis Avenue" and naming it "Bobby Rush Boulevard" a Grammy-winning blues singer who lives in the Jackson area. Bobby Rush won a total of two Grammy Awards, one in 2016 and the other in 2020. He is also known for the "folk-funk" style.
